My son had a seizure this morning while he was sleeping, and it was probably one of the scariest experiences I've ever had.

Oh, I got fired. Was given my last check on a pay card. So I applied for unemployment and am looking for a new job.

He had one before about a month ago, but I didn't recognize it for what it was because I missed most of it (He was alone in his bed the first time, but this time he was in bed with us). It wasn't until I watched him this time that I realized what had happened before. It wasn't horribly long, but it seemed like forever... Maybe eight minutes or so. 911 dispatched an ambulance and we went to the ER, but they opted not to keep him because they said there was nothing they could really do. He seemed 90% normal by the time we left the hospital, though he was a little weak. After more sleep, he's at about 99%.

Wednesday we have an appointment with his doctor to get him to a kids' neurologist - probably up north in Seattle or Tacoma - and get an MRI.

Scary shit.

Maj: As someone who has seizures, I really am sorry for what you are going through and what your son is going through.

A few good things to keep in mind about seizures, they are pretty quick. Don't train any of the myth stuff like putting iron or anything else in their hands or holding them tight. You really have to let the seizure work its course.

If it does look like he might cause series damage to himself then you can carefully take some action to keep him safe. biting his tongue or gums a lot is one such example. There can be some tongue biting during a seizure but that unfortunately is considered normal by most doctors and EMT. Excessive biting is bad though. Also try to make sure he doesn't swallow his tongue. So, this might require watching him or even turning him onto his side. Calling 911 for every seizure might not be the best idea. If it turns out to be serious and not stopping past the first 10 minutes then go call them.

It wouldn't hurt to go see an epileptologist (specialized neurologist) just so you can get a better idea of what to expect when dealing with a young kid having seizures. I started getting them when I was close to 11 years old. So while I can give you some advice on this stuff, I don't know enough about how this might effect a baby/toddler.

I just know a big concern for seizures is baths and swimming. So be careful on that front. Definitely scary stuff.

Thank you for the advice. It's so hard to not try to hold him - my instinct is to try to comfort him, even though I realize he's not aware of what's going on.

So my son found a web-based RPG and totally went through character creation while Ess and I were dealing with today's groceries. When he got to the character's name, he spelled it Gionni. Not too bad for the first time unassisted.

Nice. Hopefully, this isn't one of the web RPGs that tries to drown the user in microtransaction offers.

My friend and I went to a test screening of movie Seth MacFarlane is producing (Teddy bear brought to life with a wish, still in guy's life when he's 35. Basically, the sub plot of the Muppet Movie made into a main plot, with added sexual, racist, and drug humour).

It was... ok. The bear sounded like Peter Griffin the hole time, so it was distracting. There was one other thing though....

Before the movie, my friend and I were bullshitting, and one of us made a crack about nazis. The guy in front of us literally, and seriously, turned around and said "Hey, just so you guys know, I'm a full blown nazi in Church of the Creator. Just might want to be more aware of who's around you." The whole rest of the time before the movie I was having an internal debate between "Shit Disturber Prak" and "Vaguely able to interact with society Prak." We continued to make snide comments about nazis ("Shame this isn't a Hellboy movie"), just lower, because we pussied out.

The way this relates to the movie, however, is that it is incredibly hard to laugh at the absurdity of racial humour when you know the guy sitting in front of you is laughing his tits off and agreeing.

There are basically three sane philosophies you can take there:

- It is always incorrect to broadly condemn groups of people. That's the easy way, and it's easy to understand why the Nazis are bad under this philosophy, but it also means that I can't do much about it without being equally bad myself. "He is a Nazi, I should punch him in the face" is equivalent to "he is a Jew, I should punch him in the face".
That's actually sort of a respectable attitude, in a late Gandhi kind of way, but really hard to follow through with and leads to some really unpleasant consequences.

- "I am racist (or a whatever-ist), and I am okay with that." It's not a good philosophy, but it's coherent and makes it real easy to align your actions and your beliefs.

- Tolerance, not acceptance. I don't have to like your beliefs, but I am still obligated not to mess with you. Regardless of whether I believe Tibetans are baby-eating monsters, living saints, or just a bunch of people from the same region, I don't tell Tibetan jokes because it's rude (replace Tibetan with your ethnicity/political party/evil philosophy of choice).

Personally, I believe the third option.

There is a fourth way, which I would call the Pierre Desproges Option : 'You can laugh at anything but not with everyone'.

There's another option besides those, and it's called not being retarded.

Hating groups of people is okay when those groups of people deserve it, and not when they don't.

So for example, hating black people because they are inferior is wrong, because they aren't.

Hating people who hate black people because they are inferior is correct, because those people are wrong.

It's amazing how you can actually differentiate black people and Nazis as groups, and justifiably treat them differently when you aren't retarded.

That's option two. "They deserve it" is exactly the rationale behind the holocaust.

Dressing it up in sanctimony isn't new either.

Option G: Only hate meta-haters that have an odd-numbered meta-hate level. So you're cool with people on meta-levels 0 (people that don't hate anybody) and 2 (people that are anti-racist/anti-sexist/etc.), but hate people on meta-levels 1 (racists/sexists/ect.) and 3 (people that hate anti-racists/anti-sexists/etc.)

Awesome. It's sort of like hating intolerance, except people who are intolerant only of intolerance.

There are two kind of people i hate in the world.

Those that hate other people for their culture.
And the Dutch.

I believe in option 2. Work with the public long enough, and you will hate nearly everyone.
